Nigeria's electoral preparations have come under renewed public scrutiny after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) identified 268 voter records containing suspected AI-generated photographs and other irregularities.
INEC's Director of Information and Communication Technology, Lawrence Bayode, disclosed that the commission's Automated Biometric Identification System had flagged the records for further investigation.
The commission is now examining the affected entries as part of its efforts to clean up the preliminary voters' register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
One issue attracting particular attention concerns the alleged exploitation of special registration provisions intended to accommodate people with disabilities, including individuals with incomplete or missing fingers.
INEC has also made an important distinction: photographs genuinely enhanced using AI-powered mobile applications will not automatically result in a person's exclusion. The concern is with photographs generated artificially or records containing other forms of irregularity.
Why this matters: Electoral credibility begins with the accuracy of the voters' register. Nigerians need assurance that eligible citizens are protected from wrongful exclusion while fraudulent registrations are identified and addressed.
The commission's verification process and public disclosure of its findings will be important in rebuilding confidence.
